Index!

aris_tgd: Personal avatar Phumiko (phumiko), Made by me. Personal avatar, please do not take.
This is an index of all of my fiction, fan or otherwise. It will be stuck to the top of my journal (until 2027, hello future readers!) and I will update it with new things and hopefully get caught up on old things.

GENERIC DISCLAIMER: Works in this journal may be based on material written by other people. This is Fair Use, and I'm not going to try to get money off these works, in any way, shape, or form. The characters and scenarios may very well belong to other writers or the suits of the corporations they work for. I'm not trying to muscle in on their territory.

POLICY ON FAIR USE: Speaking of which: Remixing (defined loosely as "taking the concept and running with it, and coming back with a new spin on it") the material/stories/etc herein is fine. I give permission. I would really appreciate it if you the writer kept the following in mind, though:
  1. If you remix something of mine, you can let me know. Post a comment here; I'd be excited to hear about it! But if you don't want to comment, that's okay, too. Blanket permission means just that: go ahead.

  2. Please don't remix the Babylon 5 short "Hidden Past, Painful Memory." Besides having a cruddy title, I've got my own clear view of what's going on there and I feel very sensitive with having it touched. That being said, if you do decide to write your own version based on the framework I've got there, just don't tell me about it.

  3. If you come up with something cool based on stuff I wrote, I might borrow it back without asking first. Um. I'll try to ask.

  4. The author reserves the right to be unfair and petulant, not that it's going to change anything. The author also reserves the right to change these rules or the wording thereof at any time.

Other things I am giving blanket permission for: Artwork, podficcing, other derivative works based on my stuff. Go for it!

Most of my fic can be found at [archiveofourown.org profile] ArisTGD on the AO3. That's being updated way more regularly than this index!

Fanfic on this journal is rated subjectively by the author in three categories: Sex, violence, and how much your brain gets a workout.

Unless indicated, links point to posts in this journal.

Frozen (12255 words) by faviconAris Merquoni
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Zuko (Avatar), Katara (Avatar), Sokka (Avatar), Hahn (Avatar), Iroh (Avatar), Aang (Avatar), Yugoda
Summary: Zuko falls at the North Pole, and when he comes around he's not sure if he's more angry at the Avatar, his uncle, or himself. A story of emotional growth and tea with too much salt in it. AU from "The Siege of the North Part 2."

So this fic is what I've been sardonically calling "Sad Zuko in Snow" for the past week or so, and now that the LNYE is done I'm actually posting it!

Alternate title and summaries: "Sad Zuko in Snow: How Zuko Learned to Stop Shouting and Make Friends"

"Zuko, I brought you soup!" "I don't want soup, I want honor!"

... So yeah. Humor! Snow! Soup! Honor! A surprising number of words for such a light premise!
aris_tgd: I feel like a Vorlon on its back--I can't get up and it's my fault! (amused at own stupidity), Kosh fell down! Made by me.
List all the songs whose lyrics you've used for fic titles.

Okay, in reverse chronological order:

Handel's "Messiah" - Thy Rebuke Has Broken His Heart (Richard II, Richard/Henry, soulbonding fic for Yuletide)

Carbon Leaf, "Raise the Roof" - To Lock Up the Heart but Keep the Key Within Reach (PotC, Jack/James, part 3 of the reincarnation!AU)

Indigo Girls, "Galileo" - Bombshells of My Daily Fears (PotC, Jack/James, part 2 of the reincarnation!AU) (Also, the whole reincarnation!AU's title is Some Other Fool Across the Ocean Years Ago from the same song.)

High School Musical, "Bop to the Top" - Bop to the Top (Ryan/Sharpay incest frottage fic. Yay, [community profile] kink_bingo!)

Charles Coborn, "The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo" - Dame Fortune Smiled (PotC, Jack/James, steampunk AU prequel thing.) This one's kind of obscure and I was actually really proud of finding it.

Gilbert and Sullivan, "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General" (sort of) - I Am the Very Model of a Cyberpunk Librarian (Dirty Dub Mix) (PotC, various pairings, cyberpunk AU) and I've Information Academic, Highbrow, and Contrarian (Clean Steam Dance Mix) (PotC, Jack/James, steampunk AU). Okay, not direct quotes, but obviously "from" the song.

... and wow, that's really it? Hunh. I guess I don't use song lyrics very often. I have a lot of stories titled out of lines from Shakespeare that didn't count, which was amusing; I'd scroll down and go "That's a quote!" and then go "Wait, no, that wasn't set to music, was it. Right."

Give me a character/show/pairing/etc and I'll give you a song!

Stole this one from [personal profile] kanata. I'll let you know if I don't know a character, but I've caught a lot through osmosis. Recent/perennial fandoms include Game of Thrones/ASoIaF, Babylon 5, Pirates of the Caribbean, Avengers movieverse, Leverage, Classic Who, anything Donnie Yen has been in, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Water Margin.

ETA: Oh, and Homestuck, dammit. ;)

I just finally posted Sea-Change, the PotC FtM!Norrington fic I wrote for the 2011 Trans Fic Mini Fest over at [personal profile] kanata's last year. So if you were looking for a permanent link to it, it's now on AO3.

So there are, I think I mentioned, so many awesome vids this year? There are a lot of awesome vids this year.

As always, I tend to only watch vids in sources that I'm familiar with, unless I'm really sure that they're going to be accessible or I'm familiar with it slantwise, like through fannish osmosis, and I don't care about spoilers. So there are a ton of really awesome vids that I just haven't watched yet, but you should go to this year's masterlist and check them out.

That being said, here are some of the vids which blew me away this year:

Recs under cut! )

All right! Check other people's recs and the masterlist for tons of awesome stuff I didn't mention, because there are 198 vids this year and they all deserve love. Wow.
aris_tgd: Wheelchair Ballroom, text: "Dance" (dance), Kevin and Simone from Dancing on Wheels. Made by me.
There are SO MANY great vids, you guys. Go check out the masterlist for all of the awesomeness. Me, I got two vids, a rockstar DEBS vid and a sexy, violent Ninja Assassin vid. I love them both to pieces. I will have more recs probably tomorrow, since I've gone through the entire list of fandoms I recognize, but for now, go comment on awesomeness, because there is so much of it!

Full disclosure: I know the blogger in question, and she works at a (non-Marvel, non-DC) comic book company. In Portland. So, y'know, she has a point about this:

Transcript under this cut. )

Seriously people, what the hell. I understand being angry about SOPA and PIPA. I am angry! I understand being angry about Megaupload. I am also angry!

I am also angry about something suggesting boycotting ALL ARTISTS and possibly doing SERIOUS damage to people's livelihoods.

Maybe instead of calling for blanket boycotts of everything, we could actually list and call out major SOPA/PIPA sponsors? Or have a conversation about ways to get more money into the hands of artists themselves without the intervention of producers who screw over their own talent to make a profit?

Oh, you say, but the statement doesn't mean indie artists. It doesn't mean don't spend money on art, just don't spend it on big corporations, don't you know that?

To just quote for a second:

"Did you actually read that thing whose intentions you’re defending so vigorously?

“Do not buy a single record. Do not download a single song, legally or illegally. Do not go to see a single film in cinemas, or download a copy. Do not buy a video game in the stores. Do not buy a single book or magazine.”

Oh, yeah, obviously it’s not about boycotting everything! It’s not like the statement explicitly tells people to do exactly that! Do you think they’ll ignore what you explicitly said because they’ll just magically know that you meant they should do something else entirely?

Seriously, if you’re right and the official statement of this movement in fact runs directly counter to its intentions, that’s a really big problem that needs to be fucking addressed."

1. Lessons Learned and Unlearned by Jennifer J. Carroll on Feministe. This actually had some interesting discussion in the comments last I checked. It was timely, because I'd just gotten linked to The Water Keeps Flowing over on Social Text, which neatly examines and eviscerates (and cleanes and debones and cooks) an argument that I myself have been guilty of... um, not exactly making, but putting too much credence on.

Anyway, one of the reasons I'm linking is to have both of these here when I want to reference them, and to go back through the links/comments of that Feministe post and do more reading.

2. Kickstarter for Sins Invalid: An Unashamed Claim to Beauty. I've heard for a couple years now about Sins Invalid's work, but I've never been in the area for long enough to catch a performance. And now they're crowdsourcing funding for a movie! I am excited!

I haven't really responded to any comments on my Yuletide fics yet, not because I don't love you all, but because my weeks since reveal have sort of gone like this:

Jan 1: Hangover! (Well, Dec 31 I threw a party, that was sort of how it was going to go.)
Jan 2: Clean up from party!
Jan 3-6: Work kicks my ass as a welcome back
Jan 7: Surprise trip to Seattle!
Jan 8: More Seattle and driving back! (3 hour drive, not too bad.)
Jan 9-present: Food poisoning.

So... yeah. I'm getting my ass kicked by some flavor of GI unpleasantness. The really, really unpleasant kind. On the plus side, I did get my Festivid done, though I still want to fix a couple of things before reveals (and render a nice-sized version for reveals, you know,) and I've spent the last few days while not in distress catching up on Leverage and watching Game of Thrones. Woot, shinies!

Urgh, lying down again now.

It's going to be a Process going back and putting all those author names on those stories, I tell you. So my recs post is going to be authorless for a bit. But! I can now thank [archiveofourown.org profile] krityan for my Assault Girls story Where This Razor Has Been! Thank you!

FANDOM OF TWO, NOW!

Anyway, I wrote four full-length stories and two treats. Now it's time to babble about them!

Two Adam Adamant Lives! stories, one Richard II story, one The Mighty Boosh/Planetary crossover, and a Grimm story. )

So that is it! Happy New Year, everyone. Now to vidding.

YULETIDE!

Okay, I have literally been up all night waiting for Yuletide to open. And now it is!

I GOT AN ASSAULT GIRLS PRESENT!

This is now twice I have convinced someone to switch from the assignment they matched me on to a movie I was trying to get more people to watch. Secret success? *raises eyebrow*

Where This Razor Has Been (1066 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Asaruto Gâruzu | Assault Girls (2009)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Gray (Asaruto Gâruzu)
Summary: Gray-centric character introspection? ALL KINDS OF HEAD CANON.

This totally gets Gray as a MMORPG player, guys. I think I know this person.

So for this Yuletide, I wrote SIX stories. Two of them are in Madness. Figure out any of them and I will totally... I guess, write you more fic! Unless of course they're fics I have already told you I was writing, so, you know. Let's not be unreasonable here. ;)
aris_tgd: Starship and quote: "'Tis not too late to seek a newer world." (newer world), Made by me.
So the fic I wrote was Sword and Fan and Feathered Jacket (1326 words) for Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame. My love for that movie, I believe I have shown it. So I was super-excited to get this prompt!

I was also a little terrified, because things I know about the Tang Dynasty: very, very few.

[personal profile] yifu asked for Di Renjie and/or Shangguan Jing'er, but her prompt was asking questions about how Jing'er came to serve the empress, and how she felt about it. I had already been planning on writing about Jing'er and the empress, so this was perfect! And then I wrote a scene and a half and doublechecked her letter, and she was mostly interested in canon het or gen, and I was all, woah, this could go femslashy really, really fast. So! Then came Di and the dancing.

I wanted to make the story about Jing'er learning things, but keep it grounded in that Jing'er is awesome and really good at some things, but not others. Di Renjie is the master at suavely being better than everyone, but it's only really impressive when you look at who he's up against in those scenes. Jing'er is a very competent women, and I needed to respect that. But she is also still learning to cope with things outside her competence.

I threw the dancing in there--well, I was initially thinking about dances one can do with a partner, but five minutes of research showed me that Chinese dance didn't really have a partnering/courting aspect until Westerners started bringing those over, so that was shot. Still, dance was a big thing! Unfortunately, specific information on Tang Dynasty dance is google-overshadowed by a Tang Dynasty Dance company, whose recreations... I am not competent to judge. I managed to find a few pages of information and put in just about every fact I could squeeze. In fact, the title of the fic (and more specifically, the line Di says about "the dances of the rainbow skirt and feathered jacket") comes from one of those pages, quoting a contemporary source.

Jing'er's thing about being good at fighting but terrible at dance is partly based on my own frustration at being good at dance but terrible at Dance Dance Revolution. I feel like something this related to my skills should not be this hard! AND YET.

Ah yes, and one last thing: I apparently do my ripping off in the correct fandoms, because nobody has yet noticed the lines that I ripped straight out of Babylon 5. My fangirling, let me show you it.

HI PORTLAND I MISSED YOU!

I didn't miss stores closing at 6 or 7 on a Sunday, though. Eesh.

Anyone want to help me with some white wine? And I don't mean "Why can't I say that word if rappers say it all the time." I mean, seriously, I don't know what I'm going to do with all this wine. There is a lot.
aris_tgd: Wheelchair Ballroom, text: "Dance" (dance), Kevin and Simone from Dancing on Wheels. Made by me.
I've added author names to my recs post! Thank each and every one of you.

I wrote one of those Di Renjie stories:

Sword and Fan and Feathered Jacket (1326 words) by faviconAris Merquoni
Fandom: Di Renjie | Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Di Renjie, Shangguan Jing'er, Wǔ Zétiân
Summary: Jing'er never really got the hang of politics, either.

I will have more to say about this! But right now I have to drive from California back up to Portland. Short version: Researching Tang Dynasty dance is surprisingly hard. Thank you for the prompt, Lihai, and thanks to everyone who read it!
aris_tgd: Dureena from Crusade, text: "Thief" (Dureena-thief), Dureena. Made by me.
1. Wine tasting: Five wineries, two and a half cases.

2. Finished my Kaleidoscope reading and reccing.

3. Thanksgiving day dinner with family.

4. Got my car serviced.

5. Started in on Game of Thrones (to the point I do not want to stop, which is basically the important point)

6. Beat Portal and Portal 2.

... So far, so good!
